“The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.”
– Carl Sagan
Moby also has a song about it.My daughter saw me working on this brush script and asked if it was really true. I don’t think Carl Sagan would lie about that kind of thing, but I did a bit more reading. And I found this picture. This is what dying stars look like.
This image shows Chandra’s view of Menzel 3 (Mz3, also known as the Ant Nebula), a planetary nebula about 3,000 light years from Earth. Dynamic elongated clouds envelop bubbles of multimillion degree gas produced by high-velocity winds from dying stars.
I think the description in the Flickr post from The Smithsonian Institution is as beautiful as the image.
Fast Winds from Dying Stars.
